LMPD's Downtown Area Patrol now open at Second and Jefferson

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- City officials have taken another step aimed at controlling crime and violence in downtown Louisville.

On Friday the city unveiled its new Downtown Area Patrol. It is part of LMPD's first division, but the new office is located in at Second and Jefferson.
Twelve officers will work out of the office and will patrol the area on bicycles, Segways and 4-wheelers.

City officials say this is another move in response to the youth violence we saw in March of this year. Extra officers will eventually be added to the downtown area patrol location.

Business owners like Paula Bader are excited about the new addition but hope police get some help from parents this summer.

Paula Bader's gas station and market store was slammed during a night of rampant vandalism and violence by youth in March of this year. "It was just bad, it was a bad night," said Bader. Since then, metro police have added cameras in certain areas and more officers in downtown Louisville.

The new downtown area patrol is easy to see. It's located at the corner of Second and Jefferson in downtown Louisville. Mayor Greg Fischer says that's by design. "One of the things we wanted to do," Fischer told WDRB's Stephan Johnson, "was to make sure that people could see that the is a permanent police presence here."

They will also staff that location with officers who have been injured but can still work behind a desk.
