Kentucky Kingdom celebrates grand re-opening

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - Kentucky Kingdom celebrates its grand opening today, after being closed for five years.

The park shut down in 2009, but over the past year, Louisville businessman Ed Hart has renovated and transformed the park with a $43.5 million investment. Kentucky Kingdom will feature 20 new attractions, including the park's first new steel roller coaster in 17 years. The size of the water park has also doubled and now boasts the tallest water slide in North America. Hart says he's planning to add even more to the amusement park.

"I think we're going to make it even a little bigger, a little better, a little wetter in the years to come," Ed Hart, President and CEO for Kentucky Kingdom, said.

The park is no longer hiring, because about 1,000 positions have been filled for the summer. Last month, Hart had said he was on track to sell about 100,000 season passes this year.

Kentucky Kingdom will stay open through the end of September and throughout the Kentucky State Fair.

The gates open at 11:00 a.m.
