LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Boy Scouts of America kicking off Memorial Day weekend bright and early.

Hundreds of Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and adults placed small American flags at each of the more than 11,000 headstones of soldiers buried at Zachary Taylor National Cemetery on Brownsboro Road Saturday morning.

They say it's their way to pay tribute to the country that does so much for them each day.

"I think its a great lesson for the kids," Troop 30 scout master Dan Sturtzell said, "because the kids enjoy being here and reminding them that people make a sacrifice for their freedoms, for their lifestyle, even the young scouts know what those folks have done for us."

The Scouts come out each year to put flags on the headstones in an event open to the general public.
