LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Diageo, one of the biggest spirits companies in the world, plans to build a $115 million whiskey distillery, with six warehouses for barrel aging, in Shelby County.

The company announced plans for the distillery on Thursday shortly after it was approved to receive up to $4 million in economic development incentives from the state and Shelby County.

Diageo has dozens of brands including Crown Royal Canadian whiskey, Captain Morgan rum, Tanqueray gin and Smirnoff vodka. But the company does not have a big presence in bourbon. Bulleit is its most recognizable brand, according to its website -- which mentions only one other bourbon, IW Harper.

The distillery, planned to open in 2016, will produce "a number of current and future Diageo bourbon and North American Whiskey brands," according to a Diageo press release. The company did not say which brands will be made in Shelby County, and a Diageo spokeswoman did not immediately return a call Thursday.

Gov. Steve Beshear applauded Diageo's investment.

"The world’s taste for bourbon continues to grow, and Diageo’s new distillery in Shelby County will help satisfy that demand," Beshear said in a prepared statement.

By the facility's second year in operation, it will have 31 full-time employees, according to documents from the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority. Those jobs are expected to pay an average hourly wage of $29 -- which includes not only cash compensation but the value of employee benefits like health insurance, according to the state.

State records indicate the facility will be in Bagdad, Ky. Diageo says it will buy about 300 acres off Benson Pike for the facility and warehouses.
