Louisville mom talks about JCPS bus incident that left daughter without two front teeth

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - A Louisville mom is speaking out after her daughter was hurt on a JCPS school bus in 2013.

Latasha Lewis says on October 21, her daughter came home from detention with a busted lip, and that the accident was caused by the driver hitting the brakes.

"She's sitting behind him in the seat, his elbow was up on the seat,” said Lewis, “and when the bus driver stomps on the brake her mouth hits his elbow."

The girl's mouth was bloody so Lewis called the school and then ran her to the dentist.

"And I brought her in and she gave her X-rays, antibiotics and pain medicine,” she said.

The following day, the girl came home from school with a swollen lip. "The second dentist looked at the X-ray and said 'oh, her teeth are fractured in her gum, first two, up in there fractured’”, said Lewis.

The examination found two fractured teeth and a third that was loose. The 12-year-old then had to go into emergency surgery.

"She's very self-conscious now,” said Lewis. “She talks covering her mouth and she don't smile like she used to anymore."

Latasha confronted JCPS with the pictures of how the accident left her daughter.

"They took the pictures,” she said, “and true enough the investigator contacted me."

JCPS put together a 55-page report following the claim. District spokesman Ben Jackey said, "They substantiated that Mr. Babbage intentionally slammed the brakes and that caused an injury to the student."

Donald Babbage, 60, is an activity bus driver. "With an activity bus,” said Jackey, “it could be anything from possibly a field trip or something students are engaged in, or it can be a situation which happens a lot, where they make arrangements to bring students home after school."

Babbage wrote a letter saying the students were standing up, running around, and were told to sit down five times. Latasha says slamming the brakes was the wrong thing to do.

"I wish he could see these pictures so he could see the pain. Do you have all your teeth? My baby lost two of her teeth, at 12-years-old, unwillingly."

Babbage is charged with 4th degree assault and is due in court next month.

He was suspended for 10 days back in January and also placed on a probation period for 90 school days.
