I want to give you an update on WDRB’s invitation to host the debates between Allison Lundergen Grimes and Mitch McConnell.
As you know, Senator McConnell issued an invitation to Ms. Grimes to debate him three times between now and Labor Day. I invited the candidates to hold the debates here at WDRB and partnered with the Kentucky Broadcasters Association to make them available on every radio or TV station in the state that wants to carry them. Senator McConnell’s camp accepted my invitation the day it was extended. And now, I’m happy to report that I’ve had a very encouraging discussion with Ms. Grimes’ senior advisor, Jonathan Hurst.
Has the Grimes campaign accepted Senator McConnell’s invitation to debate? Not yet. But it appears that they’re now at least open to discussing the possibility.
If these debates do happen, the final decision regarding dates and format will be up to the candidates. Despite their ideological differences, I wanted both the Grimes and McConnell campaigns to understand two things. First, that WDRB will provide a completely unbiased forum for their ideas – that’s our journalistic imperative and I’ve given both sides my word on that. And second, that the statewide TV and radio network we’ve already assembled offers their best opportunity of communicating directly with the most Kentucky voters possible.
