Norton Surburban NICU has more room to grow

Posted: Updated:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Thursday morning was moving day for babies in Norton Suburban's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

The old NICU was spread out over two floors and had no private spaces for families. NICU nurses and doctors say better lighting and a more comfortable setting will be good for everyone.

"When you're in an atmosphere that's very loud, and the lights are on, and there's too much stuff going on, I don't think the parents feel like they want to stay," said Mary Jean Precious, an NICU nurse manager. "I think the noise bothers them, and now they're going to be so comfortable and be able to stay with their baby and help provide care much easier than they could in an open area."

The NICU has grown from 5,000 to 31,000 square feet and has 40 beds for the babies.
