Local legislators sound off on Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Varying opinions are coming from Kentucky's top lawmakers: is Bowe Bergdahl an American soldier, kidnapped by the Taliban, or a warrior for Islam?

New documents reveal Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl may have been both. The Taliban says they treated the 28-year-old well during the five years they held him. He was given fresh fruit, played soccer with them, and even took part in AK-47 target practice with his captors.

As far as Bergdahl's behavior while he was being held, it's certainly possible he was doing what he thought he needed to do to save his own life.

No one has heard from Bergdahl.

U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell says he's disappointed by the swap.

"I think releasing these five hardcore Taliban was a big mistake for our country," McConnell said.

For his part, U.S. Representative John Yarmuth says he's glad Bergdahl is back.

"If it had been my son there I would've asked the President to do exactly what he did," Yarmuth said.
