Local veterans welcomed home by hundreds after Honor Flight

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - Local veterans who visited Washington, D.C. during an Honor Flight were greeted by hundreds of supporters when they landed at Louisville International Airport Friday night.

"It's awesome. I can't believe all these people have come here to welcome these guys home," said Inez Brooks, the wife of a veteran on the trip.

The flight landed on the 70th anniversary of D-Day. Nearly 30 World War II veterans were able to visit their memorial for free on the flight. Kentucky Korean War veterans were also on the trip.

"It's just really heart wrenching, it just really touched my heart," said World War II veteran Glenn Fisher. Family members of all ages waited for the veterans to exit the plane. Music and signs were also ready for their arrival. "It just means so much to see that people really care," said Fisher.

Brooks knows this kind of welcome home is what these veterans deserve. "My husband spent three years over there. The best years of his life --18, 19, 20 years old," she said. "He was so excited. This morning, I had to remind him of everything he had to do," Brooks continued.

Among the airport crowd was a group serving in the U.S. Navy now. "Anytime you sacrifice yourself for your loved ones and your family, you deserve something like this. When they come down, it's going to be very emotional for everybody," Adam Leeds said. "One day they might be doing this for me, so it's a way to return the favor," he continued.

The trip was sponsored by Ford Motor Company. All travel and food was free. Honor Flight Bluegrass hopes to get as many World War II vets to D.C. as possible. Future flights will be scheduled for later this summer and fall.

Senator Mitch McConnell and Congressman John Yarmuth helped send the vets off Friday morning.
