Triple Crown drought continues as California Chrome falls short in Belmont Stakes

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Hopeful fans watched the Belmont Stakes from Churchill Downs Saturday, thinking they just might witness a triple crown."I was hoping for it.” Ronnie Upshaw said, “It would have been good for the sport so I was hoping for it."

Under the twin spires, horse racing fans gathered at the possibility of watching California Chrome take it all, and when he came in 5th, you could feel the wave of disappointment come over them. It was not to be, leaving Affirmed as the most recent Triple Crown winner in 1978.

"It's tough,” Said Aaron Stephenson, “you know, we were all rooting for him. We wanted to be here on an epic day but unfortunately it didn't happen tonight."

Tim Wood says deep down, he truly thought Chrome would pull it off. "Very disappointed,” Tim said of his mood, “I would have loved to have seen a Triple Crown winner even if we would have hit the exacta and won 6 dollars, I would have been happy because we would have had a Triple Crown winner."

Some, like Stephenson, just wanted to witness a Triple Crown. "When was the last one? 78?” Stephenson asked. “So you know that's a long time. I wasn't even born then. I'd like to see one in my lifetime. "

“You want to see a Triple Crown winner,” Wood said, “It's such a bummer that we don't have it but you know what, we still got a chance ... so drinks are on me."

So the countdown to next year begins. “There's always next year, right?” Stephenson said “Always next year."
