Indiana man accused of killing Purdue student will plead insanity

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WDRB) -- An Indiana man will claim insanity in the fatal shooting and stabbing of a Purdue University teaching assistant.

Cody Cousins is charged with murder in the Jan. 21 death of 21-year-old Andrew Boldt inside a Purdue classroom. Cousins told a judge last month that he was taking medication for schizophrenia.

His attorney has filed formal notice that he will use the insanity defense.

Prosecutors say that type of defense is rarely successful in Indiana.

If a jury decides Cousins was insane at the time of the murder, he could be found either not guilty due to mental illness or guilty, but mentally ill.
