Preps underway at Valhalla Golf Club ahead of PGA Championship

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) --  Some of the top golfers in the world will head to Louisville in early August to play in the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club. From the ground to the sky Monday, you could see things were happening across the course in preparation.

"It'll change day by day from here, it really will," said Valhalla Golf Club General Manager Keith Reese. He took WDRB on a ride through the grounds to show us how work is escalating.

"The build out for the tournament has actually started so we've got construction crews and semi-trailers coming through, delivering flooring and getting all the infrastructure in place. We've got flyovers going for television," Reese said.

Leader boards, bleachers and ropes will also soon be added. The start of the tournament, August 4, is less than two months away.

"I think in an average year the PGA Championship has one of the strongest fields in golf, we average 95 of the top 100 players in the world normally each year so there will be a lot of familiar names," Reese told WDRB.

It's been 14 years since Valhalla has hosted the PGA Championship. Officials are expecting 250,000 people for the week. That many people translates into a lot of money for Louisville. Local tourism officials say the PGA Championship brought $92,000,000 to the Charleston area in 2012 and around $100,000,000 to Rochester in 2013.

Reese says tickets for Friday and the weekend have already sold out, but tickets for the practice rounds and Thursday are still available.

"There there will be a lot of familiar faces and some great golf," he said.

All of the volunteer positions have also already been filled. 3,500 people will be helping out.
