Number of fast food and causal restaurants continues to grow in Louisville

ST. MATTHEWS, Ky. (WDRB) -- The popularity of fast, casual restaurants continues to grow.

Two new restaurants that cater to diners on a budget are opening in St. Matthews within just a couple of miles of each other.

Franchise owner David Robinson on Tuesday was helping to train workers for Thursday's grand opening of Dickey's Barbecue Pit on North Hubbards Lane near Westport Road.

It's the first Dickey's in metro Louisville for the Dallas based company that specializes in slow smoked Texas barbecue.

"I checked out many franchise opportunities, but Dickey's stood out in my mind because it's such a good consistent quality," says Robinson.

He says now is a good time to open a restaurant like his where two people can dine for under $25.

Add Robinson, "The restaurants industry seems to really be picking up now, the good thing about Dickey's is the lower cost of the food, when you come in it's fast and casual design."

Whether it's barbecue, pizza, or anything else, fast, casual dining continues to be the hot trend in the restaurant openings.

"Fast casual has been the only sector in the restaurant business that has been growing consistently over the past five or six years," says Wayne Albritton, the managing partner of Blaze Pizza which opened on Monday in the Shelbyville Road Plaza.

"Especially since we had the recession," says Albritton, "people are much more conscious of what they spend and they want to make sure that they are getting great value and great quality food for the dollar they are spending."

On Tuesday people lined up for free pizza outside Blaze as the restaurant celebrated its grand opening.

And for David Robinson he is already planning to open a second Dickey's in the Plainview area in about two months.
