LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A gun and a hat helped police track down a suspect they say shot and robbed a man last month.

According to an arrest warrant, the incident took place on May 23 on E. Indian Trail, near Preston Highway. Police say a man was walking up the steps to his apartment when 29-year-old Michael Jenkins walked up behind him, pulled a gun and demanded the man's money.

The victim gave Jenkins his cell phone and two packs of cigarettes, according to police.

At some point during the alleged robbery, police say Jenkins and the man got into a fight, and Jenkins shot the man in the chest. After the shooting, police say Jenkins got into a car driven by 23-year-old Donna Kennedy. He allegedly left a gun and his hat behind.

The victim was taken to University Hospital. Police say they seized the gun and the hat. The victim was later able to positively identify Jenkins as the shooter by pointing him out in a photo, according to police.

A warrant was issued for Jenkins' arrest on June 10. Both he and Jenkins were arrested earlier this month after being accused of another robbery.

Both Jenkins and Kennedy were charged with first degree assault and first degree robbery.
