Cuts needed to balance Kentucky state budget

Posted: Updated:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky's governor will have to make cuts to balance the budget.

The state will likely end the 2014 fiscal year with a multimillion-dollar shortfall, but lawmakers don't think Gov. Steve Beshear will call them back for a special session.

The fiscal year ends June 30, so state officials won't know the size of the shortfall until next month.

The state's budget director blames the shortage on individual income tax collections. The state's largest source of revenue has grown by 0.5 percent this year, but officials expected it to grow by nearly 2.5 percent.
