LMPD: Snyder shooting suspect surrenders to police

Posted: Updated:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Metro police say the man sought in connection with a shooting along the Gene Snyder Freeway has surrendered.

Jasmin Osmanovic, 23, turned himself into police at headquarters in downtown Louisville around 4 p.m. Wednesday, police said.

A judge issued an arrest warrant for Osmanovic on Tuesday. He is charged with first degree assault and two counts of wanton endangerment.

Police believe he fired one shot from a large caliber handgun along the Snyder (I-265), headed west near Smyrna Parkway Saturday afternoon. That shot struck a passing car in the passenger door and injured its driver; two children riding in the car were not hurt, police said.

The investigation into the incident included canvassing the vicinity of the freeway and neighboring homes. Police also scoured the grassy areas of the side of the highway and an on ramp Wednesday in search of additional evidence.

An LMPD Tweet issued about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday said "thanks" for the tips in the case; however, police were not releasing further details about Osmanovic's surrender. WDRB's Gilbert Corsey reported police received at least 15 tips since Osmanovic was named as a suspect on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, police spokesman Dwight Mitchell said officers believed the shooting incident to be random and not a sniper-style situation. He could not speak about a possible motive in the case since police had not yet located nor spoken with Osmanovic.

Police also reassured neighbors and drivers in the area to go about their normal routines.

Osmanovic has a prior record of assault, DUI and drug trafficking convictions in Jefferson County. He is expected to appear before a judge in arraignment court at Metro Corrections on Thursday morning.
