Free sailing clinic gives kids and adults a chance to try something new

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The River Cities Community Sailing Club hosted their 18th annual free sailing clinic on the Ohio River Saturday. The sunny weather and cool breeze drew families to try their hand at a new hobby.

Organizers say the idea is give kids a chance to do something they've never tried before and to build their skill set.

RCCSC President Roger Kennedy says the goal is to broaden kids horizons through the new activity.

"In sailing, kids learn self-reliance and self confidence, because when they're out sailing they're on a boat all by themselves, well there's actually two kids on a boat at a time, but learning how to read the wind and make that boat move through the water using just the wind," Kennedy said.

Both kids and adults got the chance to tie some knots, learn about the parts of a boat and then got to spend about an hour getting an up close look at how sailing works on the water.

The clinic took place at Carrie Gaulbert Cox park on River Road, where RCCSC offers instructional programs throughout the summer.
