Lakeside Swim Club celebrates 90 years

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) --There are a lot of places to take a dip during the summer, but there aren't many that look,or have a story like Lakeside Swim Club in the Highlands.

"It was a working rock quarry," Asst. Manager, Mary Graves said.

That was in the early 1900s, till a spring started to fill the lake.

"There were a few in the neighborhood that said 'lets make this our pool,' and it became our neighborhood pool," she said.

It did start as just a recreational spot, but things quickly got competitive with swim teams forming and tradition building.

"Any kind of athletic program that has tradition, I think that really helps. I think that's kind of underestimated," said coach, Mike Deboor.

Not at Lakeside. Success on the world's stage started in the 1940s and continues to this day.

"We've had 10 olympians. The last three have been the last three olympiads we've had," Deboor said.

He's talking about names like Rachel Komisarz and Caroline and Clark Burckle. They all started their signature swimming style in the old quarry.

And, Deboor says he believes he could be coaching many more Olympic stars in the years to come.

"It seems more feasible or more attainable when people in the same situation have done it already. They naturally expect more of themselves," he said.
