LMPD: Man struck home with vehicle causing "catastrophic" gas leak

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - Louisville Metro Police arrested a man they say crashed into a home and gas meter, which posed a hazardous situation for residents.

Jeff Carthan was taken into custody on Saturday night in the 3800 hundred block of Ralph Avenue, after police say he struck multiple vehicles and two structures.

Police documents say that Carthan struck two vehicles that were located on the south side of Ralph Avenue. Carthan then allegedly threw his car in reverse and struck a house and a gas meter. Police say the meter began to leak, which posed a threat to area residents.

"Gas levels were so high in the home that an open flame could have been catastrophic," according to a police report.

Police also say Carthan smelled strongly of alcohol and was unsteady on his feet. Carthan reportedly told police that he had consumed three beers.

Police also say that Carthan was unable to perform -- and refused to perform -- a portion of one field sobriety test. Authorities also say he was unable to walk without assistance.

Carthan was arrested and charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, wanton endangerment, and criminal mischief.
