Ky. plans to expand its early childhood education programs

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky plans to expand its early childhood education programs.

Gov. Steve Beshear announcing Monday that the state will fund 25 new "Born Learning Academies." The school-based centers are designed to help parents prepare their preschoolers for kindergarten.

"And actually what we do is educate the parents on how to turn everyday activities and experiences with their young children into learning experiences," said Gov. Beshear. "You can teach a child a lot before they get to kindergarten if you know what to do and how to grab ahold of those everyday experiences and use them as teaching tools."

A recent report found only half the kids in the state prepared for kindergarten. A mix of federal grants and a donation from Toyota will fund the expansion.

The company is already supporting 21 Born Learning Academies and will add 14 more.
