LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Police arrested a man they say fled after he struck a bicyclist, according to a police report.


Garner Byars was taken into custody on Monday afternoon after police say he struck a bicyclist on Bank Street, near 22nd Street.


Police say that when they arrived on the scene, they discovered that Byars had fled south on on 22nd Street.


Police records say the victim sustained back injuries and potential internal injuries after being struck.


Another police officer reportedly observed Byars' vehicle around the area of 22nd Street and Cedar Street. His car was stopped by officers at 22nd and Date Streets. Police say he smelled strongly of alcohol and admitted that he had been drinking. Byars also reportedly admitted that he had, in fact struck the bicyclist, according to police.


Byars was arrested and charged with assault, failure to render aid, operating a motor vehicle under the influence.
