LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- As swimming season gets into full swing, state leaders are warning people to keep an eye on their local lakes.

State and federal leaders are posting warnings about elevated levels of toxic algae in some of the state's waters. Most of the lakes were put in a "caution" category, which means the water poses a moderate risk of adverse health effects.

Exposure could cause skin or eye irritation, nausea and flu-like symptoms.

The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers in Louisville says moderate levels of the algae have been found in Taylorsville, Green River and Rough River Lakes, among others.Exposure to the algae can cause nausea and flu-like symptoms, and can irritate the eyes.

A toxic blue-green algae was already found in Taylorsville Lake two years ago.
