Coach Petrino donates $1 Million to Kosair Trauma Unit

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Bobby Petrino is getting his second chance in Louisville, but he says that's not what launching a new charity is about.

“This is all about helping the children, helping the community,” said Petrino.

The coach says a trip to visit hurt children and premature babies during his first coaching stint at U of L made a lasting impression.

“It’s about life and I don't think there's any better place that we could support than Kosair Children's,” he said.

Petrino's oldest daughter is the "head coach" of sorts for this new mission. She's the Executive Director of the newly formed Petrino Family Foundation.

“It brings me great pride and excitement to announce our pledge to Kosair Children's Hospital through the hospital foundation of 1 million dollars to help build the new Petrino Family Trauma Room,” said Kelsey Petrino Scott.

Kosair's trauma unit treats the most severely injured children in Kentucky.

“Pediatric trauma accidents injuries in children are responsible for more deaths than any of the other causes combined,” said Dr. David Foley, Kosair Trauma Medical Director.

The charity will also fund scholarships, giving money to students who could otherwise not afford to go to college. It will even donate cash to buy the Louisville marching band new uniforms.

This time around we're seeing a softer side of the successful coach. Who is trying to prove, that even he knows, .there some things just more important than the game.

“It's way on a different level than the game of football,” he said.

Coach Petrino will donate 100% of his endorsement money to his family's charity.
