INDOT: Major construction means major delays

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Major traffic delays could be starting Friday night in southern Indiana.

Construction crews will be working around the clock on I-65 for the next week and officials say to expect backups for miles.

It's a case of pick your poison. Do you take the pain all at once or spread it out to take the blows little by little?

“We're actually going to save the motoring public a lot of inconvenience by getting this job done faster,” INDOT spokesman Harry Maginity says.

Major delays and lane closures are likely until Friday, June 27th, on both sides of Interstate 65 from Scottsburg to Seymour.

Crews will be working around the clock to repair and re-pave a 20-mile stretch of road.

Drivers like Billy Deaton say they know the road needs work.

“The roads are too rough for my car” said Deaton. But the construction will cause him a major inconvenience. “I have to drive to Seymour Indiana every day,” Deaton says, “leave the house early and drive this.”

Traffic officials say don’t take 65 and don’t take US 31 either. So what are you supposed to do?

“I would say just plan on long delays,” Maginity says “look and see if there are any alternate routes besides 31 and 65.”

Drivers will be forced to deal with the traffic mess again in July for another week.

The dates for round 2 have not been set, but the end result will put the construction project ahead by 6 to 8 weeks.

“This is a very major repair that has to be done because we have a lot of failing pavement out here,” Maginity says. “It has to be done. I know it’s a great inconvenience.”
