SLIDESHOW: Kentuckiana Pride parade participants celebrate Louisville Mayor's support

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- As pride weekend kicks off, Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer has voiced his support for gay marriage.

On Friday, Mayor Greg Fischer joined Mayors for the Freedom to Marry. It's a nonpartisan group of mayors who believe that all people should be able to share in the love and commitment of marriage.

The announcement gave those at Friday night's Kentuckiana Pride Parade in downtown Louisville even more reason to celebrate.

"I applaud Greg Fischer and I hope he continues to let his opinion be more known," Evan Stoner said.

"It's great to come to a city and be accepted for who you are," BJ Burcham added.

BJ Burcham and his partner have been together for 20 years and he says most people don't realize what it means to have a mayor's support.

"To now be able to be a part of my partner's health insurance, be accepted,” Burcham said, “that will help me financially and [with the] stability we were neglected and not given."

In a press release, Mayor Fischer said:

"It is clear to me that discrimination of any form should not be tolerated and that committed gay and lesbian couples deserve the protections that only marriage can provide."

"That means that Louisville is just getting more and more progressive,“ Evan Stoner said, “I love to be in a city where it's supported so much."

Thousands of people in colorful outfits attended Friday night's parade which ended with festivities at the Belvedere.

Burcham says these events are important so everyone, not just in the gay community, can celebrate who they are.

“It's finally becoming socially acceptable to be who you are." He says, "the next generation will have it even better and the generation after that."

Those at the Kentuckiana pride parade told me Mayor Fischer’s support means a lot for Louisville's gay community.
