"Globe Guy" walks across the country for Diabetes awareness

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- He's known as the "globe guy". A Louisville man is trekking across the country to raise awareness for diabetes. We caught up with him along US-31 near Henryville.

"We've walked in 42 states I quit keeping track at 6,000 miles," said Eric Bendl.

We is not just Bendl and a giant globe, his dog "Nice" also joined his journey.

"It averages 10 miles a day, yesterday it was 10.4 after it was all said and done which I was amazed at that cause it was so hot," said Bendl.

But why in the world did he choose a giant globe?

Bendl said, "I saved the world and stored it away in my basement for awhile until my son turned 7 for his birthday party I inflated it."

As you could imagine, it drew as much attention 20 years ago, as it does today.

"Everyone kept asking what my cause was well my cause was cause im plaI'mng with my son," said Bendl.

But the real answer came when his mom died from diabetes. WDRB caught up with him during his travels in the90'ss and again in 2007, when Erik walked from Louisville to Pittsburgh, 430 miles.

Bendl said, "I just kept a nice steady pace and we did a lot of shade breaks."

Bendl is raising awareness for diabetes and encouraging people to stay on their feet.

"I'm hoping that by walking I can keep diabetes from doing the adult onset thing on me," said Bendl.

He's hoping to make it to Michigan but says this journey is not about the destination. As for hanging up the globe for good?

"I hope to keep going as long as I can, can't put a date on that one," said Bendl.
