U of L's Rocket Launch Team reaches new heights

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- U of L's rocket team is reaching new heights. WDRB caught up with them after they placed third in a recent NASA student competition.

"Essentially, you just control explosions. It's what you live for all your childhood life, so it's pretty cool," said Gregg Blincoe, a member of U of L's Rocket Launch Team.

Blincoe has been playing with rockets his entire life. The U of L Speed School student wanted to get his hands dirty by working with the real thing.

"We try to simulate a real work environment so we have an electrical team, we have a mechanical team, a programming team," said Blincoe.

U of L's River City Rocketry team gives these students a chance to build a rocket. Months of preparation led the team to the NASA Student Launch at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah.

"I think we all shook simultaneously as the rocket took off -- we were just nervous and just excited," said Sherman Dowell, a member of U of L's Rocket Launch Team.

Blincoe said, "You don't really feel the nerves kick in until it's on the pad and the safety officer has his hand on the trigger, ready to launch it."

The team's best launch of the year soared to a third place finish.

"We've been 5th and 2nd historically, so taking 3rd just solidifies where we're at nationally and what this team can do next year because we have an entire returning cast," said Justin Lord, a member of U of L's Rocket Launch Team.

The mix of emotions is what these students live for and keeps them coming back for more.

"It's 50 percent nerves and the other half just excitement of just saying, 'Hey, we're at a NASA competition and this is amazing," said Dowell.
