UPDATE: Victim killed in River Road collision identified

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Officials have identified the victim killed in an ambulance-involved accident Monday night.

Christopher D. O'Bryan, 48, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash according to Deputy Coroner Jim Wesley.

Louisville Metro Police responded to an injury accident at Frankfort Avenue and River Road.

It was a chaotic scene on River Road and Frankfort Avenue as Metro Police, Fire and EMS responded to a fatal crash involving two of their own.“EMS emergency vehicle was going eastbound on River Road to make an emergency run," LMPD spokesperson Dwight Mitchell said.

Mitchell said there was a collision after the driver of a Geo Metro turned right onto River Road from Frankfort Avenue. “As a result of that collision, the driver of the Geo Metro received fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene," Mitchell said.

Meanwhile, as neighbors looked on, firefighters worked to rescue the crew inside the ambulance.“They are pretty serious, traumatic injuries, they both were extricated from the vehicle," EMS Chief of Staff Kristen Miller explained.

The injuries were serious enough that Metro EMS CEO Dr. Neal Richmond even responded to the scene. “It is good to have a physician in your agency when something like this happens because he was able to get in there and talk with the crew and he even rode with one of the crew members to the hospital," Miller added.

In a bit of sad irony, the initial call that started the ambulance wasn’t even necessary. Miller said, “There wasn't even a need to dispatch another ambulance. Unfortunately right after it happened, the call was canceled to dispatch."

Traffic investigators are still reconstructing the accident to determine who, if anyone is at fault. “We're still in the very early stages of the investigation,” Mitchell said, “and that's what our traffic officers are doing now, interviewing witnesses and things of this nature to get a more definitive as for what happened."
