U of L doctors finish reconstructive surgery on disfigured woman from Kazakhstan

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A woman was left with a hole in her face after being misdiagnosed with cancer, but on Tuesday morning, doctors at U of L finished her last reconstructive surgery faster than expected.

The surgery for Lessya Kotelevskaya was supposed to take 24 hours, but doctors got it done in 16. Doctors rebuilt her jaw and part of her face with a bone, vessels and skin from her leg. The 30-year-old's face was left disfigured after going through cancer treatments she didn't need in Kazakhstan.

Then she came to Kentucky, where U of L doctors have worked to fix her face.

Her jaw will be more functional and she'll eventually get teeth implants. She's recovering in the ICU.

"Lessya cannot wait to get back to her normal life, like everybody else could," said Oleg Sennik, her cousin. "Like she said yesterday, she wants her 11 years back."

All of the physicians involved are making sure there is no personal expense for her family.
