LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police have arrested a Louisville mother after she allegedly intentionally left her infant child in the middle of the street wearing nothing but a diaper.

It happened on Thursday, just before 8 p.m., on Cecil Avenue, near W. Broadway. Police say witnesses saw 20-year-old Dunia Abdullahi leave the 3-month-old girl on the hot pavement, and go back into the house.

The witnesses then tried to pick the child up, but Abdullahi "aggressively approached them and informed them that it was her child and that they should leave the child alone and let her lay there."

Police say the witnesses took a photograph of the child lying on the pavement and then called police. When officers arrived, they interviewed Abdullahi.

According to the arrest report, Abdullahi told the officers that she was upset with the girl's father because he was not willing to come and pick the child up and take her to the ER for an illness -- so she put the child in the street on the hot asphalt to "wait" for her father to pick her up. Abdullahi allegedly claimed that the child had been out there for five minutes, but police say the witnesses told them it was more like 15 to 20 minutes.

Police say Abdullahi, "intentionally placed this infant in a position of possibly being hit by a moving auto or suffering from burns -- either of which could have resulted in serious physical injury or death."

The photo showed the child lying in the street, roughly five feet from the curb, "with no caretaker or adult in sight," according to police.

The National Weather Service stated that the heat index at the time was 87 degrees, but the temperature of the asphalt would have been much higher.

Police say the child suffered no visible burns, but was taken to the hospital to be evaluated.

Abdullahi was arrested and charged with wanton endangerment and first degree criminal abuse of a child under 12.
