LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Safai Coffee started with a 72-square-foot stand at the Stonefield Square Shopping Center in Louisville. Now it's the fifth-largest hospitality coffee wholesaler, and this morning, Safai Coffee packaged its 100 millionth packet of coffee.
Opening in 1998, Safai started by roasting 9,500 pounds of coffee per year. Now the company roasts over 1 million pounds of coffee each year and sells over 1 million cups of coffee a day in hotels.
"On our first day we sold $25," said Mike Safai, owner of Safai Coffee. "And I looked at my wife and said, "What have we done?" But people kept coming back next day and we grew. And from there, we are here now."
Mike and Medora Safai expanded their company to be a hospitality coffee wholesaler in 2004. Their coffee can be found in hotels such as La Quinta, Red Roof Inn, and Club Med.
