Paoli triple shooting suspect John Carpenter arrested

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Murder suspect John Carpenter has been arrested by police. Carpenter was wanted in connection with a triple shooting in Paoli that left two men dead.

Carpenter was arrested around 9 a.m. Sunday on Heidelberg Road near Corydon. Police said he was hiding in the rafters of a barn, in an area they had been searching since Thursday.

He was the final suspect in a triple shooting that happened in Paoli last Monday. James Davidson, 36, was arrested Friday and Elbert Brooks, 48, was arrested Tuesday. Both have been charged with murder.

Authorities say the shooting took place at a mobile home in Paoli Monday afternoon. According to police, the three suspects knew the victims and the murders may have been drug related.

Nicholas Fields and Corey Michael Harris were killed in the shooting and a third person was injured.

Police say the barn was within a search perimeter they had secured after Carpenter's truck was found in the area Thursday. They said tips lead them to search nearby barns.

"It was some what on a whim that the two troopers decided, 'hey why don't we go check this barn to rule it out as a possibility of where Carpenter may be staying,'" said Sgt. Philip Hensley with Indiana State Police.

Hensley said troopers waited until it was daylight to search the barn. Once inside, police say they found Carpenter sleeping in the rafters.

"As soon as we located him, and ordered him out of the barn at gun point, he followed our commands, didn't resist, and didn't give us any trouble."
