Helping Hands supports wounded warrior with humor

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The community is giving back to a local woman honored for her bravery. A night of laughs is planned to support a wounded warrior.

"I remember my battle buddy said I'm bleeding and then I blacked out," said Olivia Telles.

Instinct kicked in when a mortar explored near Telles' unit in Iraq.

Telles said, "The next thing I remember is standing over him and I was cutting my shirt because we didn't have any gauze."

She was the first person to run to his aid and treated him until the medics showed up.

"In pre-deployment training they prepare you on what to do in those situations, but when you're going through that training you don't ever think you're going to use it, you don't ever think you're going to need it," said Telles.

Telles was so quick to help an injured soldier, she didn't realize she also needed treatment. Telles had two pieces of shrapnel lodged in her leg.

"Adrenaline's pumping through you don't feel, I don't think I felt anything," said Telles.

Three years later her pain runs much deeper.

"I do now have multiple sclerosis 6 days after that motor attack. I had my first symptoms which is vertigo and it can be triggered by trauma," said Telles.

Laughter can be the best medicine helping our heroes heal from the inside out.

Telles said, "The military won't give you anything, you have to ask for it and it's been hard for me to ask."

Now she doesn't have to. Helping Hands is stepping in, hosting a fundraiser at the Laughing Derby to raise money for her expenses. Telles received a purple heart for her bravery putting others before herself.

"It's just my job, it's what I'm suppose to do," said Telles.

The fundraiser is Sunday night from 6 to 9 at the Laughing Derby. Admission is $20 per person.
