Grimes, Warren speak at Louisville College Democrat rally

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - Alison Lundergan Grimes is promoting a plan to relieve student loan debt. And she's getting help from U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

"I asked the Senator why she was so excited to come to Kentucky and she said, Alison, I've never been part of a farewell tour, and we are saying farewell to Mitch McConnell," Grimes said.

Grimes and Warren spoke at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Red Barn at U of L, a rally hosted by the Louisville College Democrats.

Sen. Warren also spoke of a failed vote in the U.S. Senate.

The bill would have allowed some people to refinance their student loan debt, and take advantage of lower interest rates. Republicans blocked the bill because it would have raised taxes on wealthy Americans to pay for it.

During today's rally, Grimes criticized McConnell and said education leads to a growing middle class.

"I believe it's a necessity that should be available to all Kentuckians," Grimes said. "It is and should be a passport out of poverty, not into poverty as Mitch McConnell would have you believe."

Around 500 people showed up at today's rally.

Grimes declined to speak with reporters after the event.
