One Indiana same-sex couple legally recognized as married

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- One same-sex couple in Indiana is legally recognized as being married.

An appeals court ruled that the state has to recognize the marriage of Amy Sandler and Niki Quasney because Quasney is fighting advanced ovarian cancer.

The women were legally married in Massachusetts last year. They were granted an emergency recognition so that Sandler's name could appear on Quasney's death certificate.

"We have a panel that's sympathetic, we have a situation that's sympathetic," said Dave Orentlicher. "You know, judges are supposed to follow the law, but they have hearts too...and they want to do the right thing."

Thousands of same-sex couples rushed to get married in Indiana after a federal judge ruled the state's gay marriage ban unconstitutional -- but the state is appealing the judge's decision, so those are not recognized yet.
