Louisville KY car accident lawyer Rob Shelton weighs in on a new law requiring police to notify parents if their child has received a traffic violation.

Louisville, KY (PRWEB) July 07, 2014

Kentucky state officials must now notify parents if their minor child receives a traffic violation, according to a new law that KY personal injury lawyer Rob Shelton of the Shelton Law Group says could save young peoples lives.

Attorney Shelton expressed his comments in response to an article about the new law on WDRB News website. (WDRB, New KY law to notify parents of children's traffic violations, June 10, 2014)

Parents want to know if their child has received a speeding ticket or another traffic violation, Shelton said. This law allows parents to obtain this information, even if their child doesnt want to share it. The passage of this legislation is good news for all of us who use Kentucky roads. This is because parents soon can take any appropriate action designed to make their children better drivers.

Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear held a ceremony on June 10 to announce the new law with the parents of Denzel Steward, who the law was named after, according to WDRB News. Steward was killed June 21, 2009, in a high-speed car accident in Louisville, WDRB News reported. One month earlier, Steward received a speeding ticket for driving over 100 miles per hour. However, the 17-year-old Louisville teenager kept the speeding ticket a secret from his parents, according to WDRB News.

"If I would have known about the ticket, I would have revoked his license and he wouldn't have been driving," Stewards mother, Shawn, said during the June 10 ceremony, according to WDRB News.

The new law will go into effect in July, WDRB News reported. Under the new law, Kentuckys Transportation Cabinet will forward a copy of all traffic violations issued to drivers under 18 years old to the childs parent or guardian, according to Open : States, a web state that monitors new and proposed laws nationwide. (Open : States, HB 90 Kentucky House Bill)

Speeding car accidents caused by teenager drivers remain one of the most common and most serious causes of auto accidents in Kentucky and around the country, according to Shelton. Many young drivers dont realize just how dangerous speeding can be, Shelton said. Teenagers who drive 80 or 90 or 100 miles per hour put themselves and everyone on the road at risk. And when they make a mistake, they often dont get a second chance. Thats why its so important that young drivers learn early to drive responsibly and stay safe on the road.
