Family, friends and strangers mourn the loss of Indianapolis Police officer

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Family, friends and complete strangers are all paying their respects to an Indianapolis officer killed in the line of duty over the holiday weekend.

"When they're beat up and they're shot at and everything, and then killed like Perry and the other officers that have died, it puts a hole in our community that can never be filled," said Sabrina Young, a neighbor. "And we've got to figure out how to fix this."

Officer Perry Renn was responding to a report of shots fired Saturday night. Police say the 22-year veteran confronted the gunman, and the two shot at each other.

Renn was killed.

The suspect -- 25-year-old Major David, Jr., was also shot and remains in critical condition.

Renn's death is the second line-of-duty death for Indianapolis Police in less than 10 months.
