LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police say two people were arrested after shoplifting at a local Meijer -- and they allegedly left their three children home alone while doing so.

According to arrest reports, 35-year-old Kurt Sheets and 33-year-old Crystal Herthel walked into the Meijer on Preston Highway, near I-265, just before 7:30 p.m. Monday.

Police say the pair -- who are in a relationship -- walked in separately, but were working together.

Herthel allegedly told officers Sheets advised her on what merchandise to steal. Police say Herthel took over $550 worth of merchandise, and walked out of the store. Sheets walked out separately, according to police.

The arrest report states that Herthel held a fake receipt in an attempt to appear as though the merchandise had been paid for. She then allegedly put the merchandise in her truck.

Police say they caught up with the pair at 7:30 p.m., and Herthel admitted to her involvement in the crime, and implicated Sheets as well. Both were arrested and charged with complicity to theft by unlawful taking.

Upon their arrest, officers say they learned that Sheets and Herthel left their three children -- ages 10, 4 and 4 months -- home alone while they committed the crimes.
