Fighting resumes between Ritz, Pence appointees

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Democratic Schools Superintendent Glenda Ritz and Republican-appointed members of the State Board of Education are heading into another showdown over control of the state's education system.

The board is set to consider measures Wednesday that would transfer control of certain items from Ritz and the Department of Education to board members and staff at a separate education agency created last year by Republican Gov. Mike Pence.

Some board members have accused Ritz of freezing them out of discussions and improperly blocking their motions at board meetings.

Ritz chairs the state board, but the other members have been appointed by Pence and former Gov. Mitch Daniels. Their fights last year spurred U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan to coin Indiana's education leadership "dysfunctional."
