LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Fire destroyed a mansion under construction in Prospect early Tuesday morning.
No one was in the home on Rama Road in the Wolf Pen Estates neighborhood.
WDRB's Kelly Davis went on a tour of the mansion, which was nearly finished.
It was still an active scene Tuesday afternoon. The smoke could been seen and smelled as it billowed through the air after fire destroyed the mansion overnight.
"I was in disbelief, so I just wanted to see it myself," said Michael Coelho, a painter.
The home was shrouded in smoke so thick, it was barely visible -- yet people were drawn to the damage.
"It's really a sad situation," Coelho said. "A lot of people put a lot of effort into it, and it's just sad. Very, very sad."
"It's not my house, so I can't imagine what the homeowners must feel like, but something you've put this much time attention and effort into -- it's pretty devastating to see it just gone overnight like that," said Tim Haas of the Haas Design Company.
A report of smoke in the area sent firefighters to the house on Rama Road around midnight. It took five fire departments three hours to get it under control. Fortunately, the home was not yet move-in ready.
"I'd say probably within 4-6 months, it would have been all finished on the inside," Haas said.
Haas is one of many sub-contractors who worked on the house for the past three years. He thumbed through pictures of what the 40,000 square foot home looked like, before it went up in flames.
"I don't know what they will do if they will build it back -- I have no idea," said Coelho. "It's a shame because it was a beautiful house."
There's still no word on how the fire started. Metro Arson is now investigating.
