LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A 12-year-old Kentucky boy led police on a chase after allegedly stealing his grandfather's SUV.

It happened in Powell County. Police got a call just just before midnight about a reckless driver. Once police confirmed they were dealing with a child, they stopped chasing him.

A portion of the 911 call reporting the incident sheds light on what happened.

"Powell County 911," the dispatcher says on the recording. "Where is your emergency?

"I'm going by the school," the caller says. "There's a 12-year-old driving a Tahoe. He stole it. He's driving recklessly and he's driving down the street without no lights on and everything."

Police say he went off the road to avoid police, flipping several times into a culvert. He suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Breathitt County Juvenile Detention Center.

The boy is charged with theft of the vehicle, wanton endangerment and fleeing and evading police.
