Man speaks after jumping off Clark Memorial Bridge for $20

LOUISVILLE, Ky (WDRB) -- A man says he was arrested for jumping off the 2nd Street Bridge on Independence Day..

According to a police report, witnesses called police after seeing two men jump from the bridge.

Lance Gillman said everyone thought he and his friend Jason Clements, who also jumped, were trying to commit suicide but he says the whole thing was over a bet.

"A gentleman was walking over the bridge and he bet us $20 that we would jump off the bridge so we did it," Gillman said.

"It was our Independence Day and there are no laws saying we can't on the Indiana side or the Kentucky side saying we can't do it and we got charged with disorderly conduct to the 2nd degree," Gillman said.

Officials say it is, however, against the law to inhibit shipping lanes.

Clements is still in jail with a July 15 court appearance.

While it might not be illegal to jump off the bridge, officials say it is dangerous and highly discouraged.

Police say the two are lucky to be alive.
