LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - It's a major achievement for a unit of the Kentucky National Guard.
Today, the 123rd Airlift Wing, was presented with its 16th Air Force Outstanding Award.
This makes them the most decorated airlift unit in the entire Air National Guard.
The wing deployed 611 Airmen to more than two dozen locations in 13 countries. This happened in a 2 year span.
300 soldiers were also sent to Turkey in response to the Syrian Civil War.
Among these deployments, the wing's Airmen set records for mission-capable and departure-reliability rates while airlifting 4,900 tons of cargo across U.S. Central Command.
"It's just a reaffirmation of how good this unit really is," Maj. Gen. Edward Tonini said. "It's not only the best flying unit, tactical airlift unit in the entire nation, it's also the most diverse airlift unit in the entire nation."
This latest honor is awarded to the top units in the U.S. Air Force. The unit received its first award in 1970.
