LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- General Electric is exploring a sale of its Louisville-based appliances business, Bloomberg News reported Wednesday.

The report, which cited unnamed "people familiar with the matter," said GE "is in talks with potential acquirers."The company last tried to the sell appliance division in 2008 but scuttled the plans amid the economic recession.

About 6,000 people work at GE's Appliance Park in southeast Louisville, where refrigerators, dishwashers and clothes washers and dryers are made. GE has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in 1950s-era factory since 2009.

"The union does not know anything about this," said Jerry Carney, President of Local 761 IUE-CWA.

He represents 3,800 hourly workers at GE's Appliance Park in Louisville. He says Bloomberg is a very respectable organization, but the article did not name a source in reference to the sale.

"We build the best products here in the United States right here in Louisville Kentucky. We manufacture at a higher quality than anybody else can and if we are sold, then I want the new company to realize what type of workforce we have here and to stay here."

Carney also said since a lot of employees are wondering what's going on, if a sale does goes through, there will be several meetings for people to figure out what's next.

"We do not comment on rumor or speculation," said Kim Freeman, GE's Louisville-based spokeswoman, on Wednesday after the Bloomberg report was published.

When asked about the possible sale, Mayor Fischer said "We love GE and hope to see them continue to expand here -- but we are referring all questions regarding the rumor to GE officials."
