Indiana abortions decline amid restrictions

Posted: Updated:

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - State health records show the number of abortions performed in Indiana has continued to decline amid a long march of laws that have made it steadily more difficult for a woman to end her pregnancy in the state.

A recent report by the Indiana State Department of Health shows about 1,000 fewer women have received abortions in Indiana since 2011, a period in which stronger abortion restrictions have taken effect. That's a drop of about 12 percent in two years.

Guttmacher Institute State Issues Manager Elizabeth Nash says Indiana is one of the most restrictive states on abortion in the country. The institute supports legal access to abortion and tracks it across the U.S.

But efforts at curbing abortions haven't always worked. Two Indiana laws have been blocked in court.
