Star Wars to take over Louisville Bats game
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Slugger Field will be transforming into a Star Wars mecca next weekend, for its first ever movie inspired ball game.
Players will dress in uniforms inspired by rebel pilots, while characters will roam the ball park. Not to mention, video clips will play on the big screen, and organizers are even considering replacing players' headshots with characters when they're up-to-bat.
Star Wars night at the Bats game is set for July 27. The Bats will play the Charlotte Knights.
The Bats aren't the first professional sports team to organize a night dedicated to the cult classic, but organizers believe they are the first to wear rebel pilot-inspired uniforms.
"We wanted to do something from the first film, and since Darth Vader had already been done, since stormtroopers has been done, this is the next best thing," said Greg Galiette with the Louisville Bats.
Galiette said they came up with the idea last fall, but it took quite a bit of time to get everything approved by Lucas Films. The production company even asked for five of the special edition jerseys.
Fans who dress in character will be admitted for $3 off the regular price. Discounted tickets must be bought the day of the game.
Each jersey will be auctioned off the Monday after the game. The auction will begin at 10 a.m. July 28 on the Bats website.
Proceeds from the auction will be donated to Kosair Children's Hospital.
And with all the attention they're getting, the marketing team is already planning for more theme nights.
"If this goes well, we're already talking about doing a Star Trek night next year," said Galiette.
