Kim Salyer named new principal at PRP

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - Pleasure Ridge Park High School has a new principal and she's the first woman to ever serve in that position.

Kim Salyer, 44, was appointed principal by PRP's site-based council on Wednesday, and approved by the district on Thursday.
She was previously an assistant principal at PRP and had been serving as interim principal for the past several months.

"Great things are happening at PRP and I'm so excited to be part of that," Salyer said in an interview with WDRB News. "My focus is on maintaining the school's tradition of excellence that is centered on achievement -- academically and otherwise -- as well as connecting with families and our community."

Salyer is the first female principal in the school's history.

She replaces David Johnson, who announced his retirement in May in the wake of a JCPS investigative report that accused him of treating himself to luxurious accommodations, meals and car rentals at the expense of PRP High School.

The report found a "lack of ethical conduct and gross mismanagement of funds."

Johnson was reassigned to the central office in January. Salyer took over as interim shortly thereafter.

JCPS Assistant Superintendent Glenn Baete says Salyer has "done an excellent job as an interim leader, and we are excited to welcome her as PRP's new Principal. She has a wide range of experience as a Counselor and Assistant Principal that will help her support the students, teachers, and families at PRP."

Salyer is a graduate of Doss High School. She started her career as a student teacher and then a math teacher at PRP, before moving to Valley High School as a counselor.

She returned to PRP in 2008 as a counselor, and later assistant principal.
