School Smarts: How to pick a major

Posted: Updated:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) --Grade school, middle school, high school, it seems to go by so fast. By the time you come up for air, you have to make a huge decision.

"What it is you really want to do with your life," incoming U of L freshman, Jay Green explained.

Whether you're going to U of L, Bellarmine, IU South East, or UK, picking a major is not easy.

"There are so many options," said U of L senior, Sarah Baer.

"You have to do some soul searching," Green said.

Green and Baer relate on that level. He's not sure if he wants to be a mechanical engineer, a news broadcaster, or an FBI agent. She only decided recently that she'll major in Geography and Geo Sciences.

"It's really stressful," said Baer.

So how do you avoid the stress? How do you make sure you pick a major and your out of a college in 4 years? WDRB put together a check list with the help of U of L Assistant Dean of Advising and Student Services, Tomarra Adams.

Her advice is as follows:

-Always make sure you're meeting with your academic counselor.
-Take the freshman orientation course that focuses on exploratory students.
-Work with your career counselor, so you can understand how the curriculum and the career really aline with one another.

They're steps that Baer says she wishes she took and steps that insure when Green turns the page on the next chapter of his life, he won't be left in the dust just because he came to college unsure on what he wanted to do.
