Stumbo says tweet about getting thrown out of White House was a joke

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A provocative tweet posted by Kentucky House Speaker Greg Stumbo Wednesday night about a confrontation at the White House created a media sensation.

Stumbo, along with Majority Floor Leader Rocky Adkins and Democratic Caucus Chair Sannie Overly, were visiting the White House as part of a conference of state lawmakers.

Stumbo tweeted Wednesday night that they had been kicked out of the White House after a shouting match with the administration over coal.

Late Thursday afternoon, Stumbo told WDRB  that the meeting was heated, but that they were not actually kicked out.

"Well, I thought it was funny. Where I come from, if you cut a meeting short and make everybody mad at the meeting and cut it short, that's the same as getting kicked out. But no, I thought it was just a funny thing to tweet, I didn't think about the media response that it's obviously gotten," said Stumbo, a Democrat from Prestonsburg.

Stumbo did tweet later that he was just kidding.

He admits the meeting with White House officials about coal policy and the loss of jobs in Kentucky did get passionate, but they were not physically tossed from the building.

Stumbo said the conversation with the White House about coal was one Kentucky's congressional delegation should have had six years ago.
