LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police have arrested a man after they say he hid a gun in his 15-year-old cousin's backpack so he could attend a rally against youth violence.

The alleged incident took place on June 6. Police say 24-year-old Stephen E. Bowen, Jr. wasn't even supposed to have a gun in the first place because he was a convicted felon, but on that date, he did. According to an arrest warrant, he placed the gun inside the backpack.

Some time later, the boy's mother learned that her son and Bowen had spent time together, despite the fact that she'd forbidden this. Police say she went to pick her son up at the YMCA and noticed  Bowen was there, and was trying to get the boy's backpack from him. That's when she became suspicious and threw the backpack -- with the gun inside -- into her car. Police say Bowen even got into her car in an effort to retrieve the backpack, buy she drove off.

When the boy's mother searched the backpack and discovered the weapon, she immediately drove her son and the handgun to Louisville Metro Police headquarters, and turned the firearm over to police.

The teen allegedly told police that Bowen hid the gun in his backpack because he was going to attend a rally against youth violence downtown, and he didn't want to be found with the weapon. The boy said he refused to put the gun in his backpack, and Bowen responded by wrapping the gun in a towel and putting it in the backpack himself, according to police.

Police issued a warrant for Bowen's arrest and he was taken into custody  Thursday night. He's charged with possession of a handgun by a convicted felon and engaging in an unlawful transaction with a minor.
